Chapter Twelve
THE RESCUE
Laura sat in her elaborate
room and looked around at the jewel bedecked curtains and rugs then stared in a mirror at
herself, beautifully coifed and dressed by her own personal handmaids who even now stood
ready to obey her slightest command. A terrible aching loneliness engulfed her and she put
her head in her and wept, feeling as if her heart would break.
Instantly her handmaids were at her side cooing their
sympathy for they knew-not-what.
Laura stood and motioned them all to leave.
Confused they did as they were told, but stayed near the
door in the corridor to await her next command.
She walked across the highly polished marble floor in her
gold sandals to the balcony that over-looked the most elaborate courtyard she had ever
seen. It was filled with statues of nymphs and satyrs intermingled in the shrubs and
flowers and fountains. Everything in the courtyard made one think of romance and
unmentionable secret adventures.
Ornate arched doorways circled the courtyard leading to
unknown areas of the palace. Every opening seemed to beckon her. She laughed through her
rears. What an idiot you are, Laura. Do you think you'll find Phil if you pick the
right door?
With that thought, tears flowed even harder until she was
sobbing. "Please help me, God. I haven't had a chance to learn much of your Word,
only what Phil has told me, but I know you hear our prayers and take care of us. Forgive
me the bad thoughts I had about Zeus. I know he is one of the evil angels. I just want to
be back with Phil, Dan and Jeremiah. Please help me!"
"Laura!"
She couldn't believe her ears. It was Phil's voice. She
wiped away her tears and stared over the balcony rail. There they were, all three of them,
waving at her as they helped themselves to the water in the fountain closest to her.
She rushed to the stairway that led off the balcony and
flew into Phil's arms as he lifted her in a joyous embrace.

"We have to get out of here before any of Zeus's
children discover we're here," Dan rumbled, looking around the sumptuous courtyard.
"Yes, we must hurry. Belinda is waiting on the other
side. There are some things we must do before we can go home." Jeremiah shifted his
weight from one foot to the other as he glanced around expecting an explosive interruption
to the peace and quiet of the garden. Peaceful settings always made him nervous.
Finally releasing Laura, Phil kept hold of her hand and
pulled her along with him. "They're right. It's not safe here.
"You must meet Belinda. She helped us to find
you."
"Who is Belinda and what do you mean 'the other side'?
The other side of what?"
"Later. We'll fill you in on the details later."
Phil pulled her along as they raced back to the doorway that led to the caverns.
The halls of the temple had ceilings so high it was
impossible to distinguish the markings on them. They all felt ants scurrying along waiting
for the giant foot to appear and step on them.
No sign of life could be seen anywhere. Even the guards had
mysteriously disappeared.
Not stopping to consider their good fortune, they reached
the section of wall containing the doorway. So artfully constructed, it was invisible,
they pounded on the wall, searching for a way to open it.
The wall slid away, opening into the dark cavern. Belinda
stood in the doorway smiling as they rushed through. She touched a point of cavern rock
and the door slid closed with a swish.

"Zeus did not have his way with you before he
left?" Belinda bluntly questioned Laura.
Startled into temporary silence at the question, Laura
stared at Belinda.
Phil looked at her anxiously. The others leaned against the
walls of the cavern getting their breath as they listened intently.
"Of course not!" Laura answered sharply slightly
angered at the strange woman's question.
"Sorry to be so blunt, but Zeus is very charming and
handsome and has angelic powers. Most women would find him totally irresistible. It is by
God's mercy he left when he did."
"As soon as he left the spell, if you want to call it
that, was broken. All I could think of was getting back to Phil and the others.
"Who are you and how do you fit into all this? How did
you get here?"
"I accompanied some friends to an archeological dig in
Egypt on the Giza plateau. The Egyptian government finally gave their consent to explore
the possibility of chambers under the Sphinx."
"Then you must be from our future, because that had
not happened yet when I left." Phil commented curiously.
"A few years. Anyway, we had dug down some thirty feet
when we came on the first chamber. Using some equipment hat can detect underground
structures, we discovered a whole complex under the Sphinx. We believe it to be a whole
city! We were amazed at the detail, the beauty, the perfection of the structures. While
the others went ahead, I stopped to investigate an opening into a room that seemed set
apart from the others. When I entered, a door slid shut behind me and walls began to glow.
At first I was scared and tried to get out, but the door wouldn't budge. I screamed
until I was exhausted. The walls were so thick no one could hear me, of course. From the
other side of that door I'm sure it was as seamless as the one you came through from the
temple of Zeus. No one could hear or even see that there was another room. I was
completely cut off and alone. I just thank God that I trust Him to take care of me or I
would have gone mad. I have no doubt of that. With Him I am never alone.
"Anyway, I decided to make the best of it and tried to
find the source of the light that caused the walls to glow, but I never did. Failing that,
I searched the room. God and precious stones were everywhere. This gold was different. I
was almost transparent."
"Sounds like Atlantis," the others chorused as
one.
"Yes. There is plenty of evidence now of a
civilization that was here before Adam and Eve; Lucifer's realm and the realm of fallen
angels, who used their powers to try to usurp God's authority."
The others exchanged knowing glances.
"I explored the room. There were objects I could not
figure out at all. I know they had a purpose. That civilization was so advanced, there's
no way to tell what some of that stuff is. I found a body of a huge man with white hair
and wrinkled face. He was perfectly preserved. He was sitting holding a book of some kind
and had what I took to be his version of a pen in his right hand, which had six fingers by
the way. He had to be over twelve feet tall and even bigger than most of the giants in
this time, only he was not deformed. He looked similar to us, only square faced.
"I tried to read what he had written, but it was in a
language I had never seen."
"Did it look something like this?" Dan knelt and
wrote a sentence in Atlantean in the dirt. "It says, I want a smoke. No word for
cigarette in Atlantean."
"That's it! That's it! Now I know why it's so
important that you go through the Arch."
