Chapter Twenty Six
KIDNAPPED!
After dropping Phil and Laura
off, Dan was eager to surprise his wife and son. It seemed like an eternity before he
pulled up at his own house . Christmas decorations sprang to life as it grew darker, but
he was surprised to find the sidewalk to the doorway packed with snow. Dave usually kept
up with that chore without any urging.
He tried the door. It was locked. He got out his own key
and opened the door. The lights were on, but it was quiet, too quiet.
He walked into the bedroom. He found Betty sitting on the
side of the bed staring blankly at the wall. He knew she heard him come in, but she
remained motionless.
"Betty, I'm home." He made his way to the side of
the bed and put his arm around her as he sat beside her. "What's up? Where's
Dave?"
"Gone. He's gone. They took him," she said in a
dull monotone.
"What are you talking about? Who took him?"
"Who knows? Maybe the ones who killed that Schultz you
went to see. Someone with a strange voice called yesterday and said we had better keep
quiet about UFOs, Schultz, and forbidden artifacts if we wanted him to stay alive."
"How did they get to him?"
"Took him right out of his bed. I never heard a
thing." At that Betty began weeping. Dan held her until her sobs subsided.
"Did you call the police?"
"Of course. They started questioning me as if I was
the one who hurt him or something."
"You?"
"They're treating me like a murder suspect. They want
to talk to you, too."
"There's no time for that. We have to get out of
here."
"but what about Davey?"
"We have information those monsters want. They will
come to us. It doesn't matter where we are, but we don't need the police
complicating things. We need to get in touch with Phil and Laura and head back for
Roswell."
"You think Davey is there?"
"The news of what we found is already on the Internet
and will be broadcast on one of the learning channels any minute now so it is too late to
stop the news of what we have discovered, but what they really want is the
plans."
"What plans?"
"Plans for building space ships, propulsion systems,
and where the black box is. They think it will tell them how to build a terrible weapon
and will tell them what the masterpiece is. The masterpiece is the only thing that can
stop them."
"And you know what all that is?"
"I know what the masterpiece is, but I'm not sure how
to use that knowledge just yet. I know the rest. Phil, Laura and I committed it to memory.
Thanks to the Internet and television, so does the rest of the world."
"They'll kill him!" Betty began sobbing
hysterically.
Dan held her as his mind raced. What would they do to the
kid? Would they keep him alive as an ace in the hole until they find out where the
contents of the black box is? My, God, that is my son they have. God in Heaven, what can I
do?
Dan gently disengaged himself from Betty and called Phil
and Laura to tell them what had happened.
It was agreed. They would all return to Roswell.
XXX
The news came over the radio as they neared Roswell. People
connected with the UFO museum in Roswell had been involved in a two van collision killing
ten people. Oddly enough, both vans were filled with UFO investigators. An interview with
Glenn Donalds had proved fruitless, the radio newsman said. He had no comment at this
time.
They all sat in stunned silence. "It was no
accident," Dan said. "You can be certain of that."
Betty's face had turned ashen. She said nothing.
"We need to continue to pray and trust God. It's our
only defense. We may have to go after those artifacts ourselves." Phil's mouth set in
a grim line. Laura's girls were wide eyed as they realized what danger they were really
in.
"Maybe Glenn had others looking besides them. Some may
have made it through," Dan said. "Let's go check with him right now."
Laura's blue eyes contrasted starkly to her white skin
which had gone even paler at the news. "Why haven't they killed us? We're the ones
who know everything."
Betty remained silent. Shock had numbed her mind.
Not noticing, Dan reminded them, "They took
Dave."
Dan pulled into the museum parking lot. They climbed out to
stretch their legs before going into the museum.
Dan shouted, "Everyone, get down!"
He had spotted a dark colored car with tinted windows
slowing as they got out. The stutter of an automatic weapon rang out and bullets spattered
their car and other cars parked near them. They covered their heads with their arms to the
sound of breaking glass. Betty screamed hysterically. Dan rolled over on her, protecting
her. She quieted at the familiar pressure of his body and just sobbed until others stopped
screaming and the car wheeled around the corner, tires squealing.
"Quick, let's get inside before they make another
pass." Dan pulled Betty to her feet and led her into the museum.
Phil pulled Laura and the girls into a run as they dashed
for the safety of the museum. They had just disappeared into the entrance when the gray
car reappeared at the beginning of the block.
Tires squealing, the car ran up onto the sidewalk.
Pedestrians and people who had come out of stores along the block to see what had happened
scattered screaming. One small child did not move fast enough. The car hit him full speed,
knocking him high in the air.
Machine gun bullets sprayed the entrance of the museum,
hitting one tourist just inside the door and another standing beside her.
Sirens wailing, several police cars screamed up, but the
gray car had disappeared around the corner. Two police cars gave chase. The other stopped
to survey the damage and call an ambulance.
Phil gasped for breath. "Those bullets should have hit
us. It's like they bounced of an invisible barrier or something."
Tina tugged at his sleeve. "Who's that guy,
Phil?" she pointed to a spot behind Dan.
They all turned. The giant figure of Salamas stood there
wearing a policeman's uniform. In his open hand he held several bullets. He grinned at
them, then faded from view.
"That was salamas." Phil grinned. "He's the
angel we told you about."
"There was a whole bunch of them. They were all big
like him and dressed like cops," Sally and Tina said. Their voices were shrill with
excitement.
"I saw them, too!" Laura exclaimed. "They
faded away before Salamas did."
"Praise the Lord. He's sent a whole army to look after
us!"
"Why couldn't they have been there to protect my
son?" Dan growled.
"It's not over yet, Dan," Phil said laying a hand
on Dan's shoulder. "We'll get him back. I know we will."
Laura peered around. "But what about these other
people?"
One man was picking himself off the ground with others
helping him to his feet. Blood covered his shirt. He looked dazed as he opened his shirt
and saw only unblemished skin.
"I felt it hit. I thought I was dead, but now there's
nothing there." He shook his head in wonder. "Did you people say something about
angels?"
"God sent an army to protect us all." Phil glowed
as he moved toward the man. "Let me help you. Would you like to hear more about being
under God's protection?" The man nodded as Phil took him aside to talk to him.
Laura was already moving toward the woman who had been hit
nearest the door. Betty followed her. Dan headed outside to see if anyone else had been
hurt.
The woman was sitting up, her hair blood soaked. One of the
museum volunteers had brought her a wet rag and was helping her wipe away the blood. Laura
and Betty knelt down beside her.
The woman gazed at them in wonder. "I was dead. I was
somewhere else, then something pulled me back here. Now I feel no pain and I can't find a
wound."
Two paramedics shouldered Betty, Laura and others out of
the way and examined the woman. Others went to the man with the blood on his shirt. The
paramedics could find no wounds either, but insisted the two people go in the ambulance,
to be sure they were all right.
Laura called after the woman, "God saved you. It was a
miracle. Don't forget to thank Him."
Betty put her arm around Laura. "It really was a
miracle, wasn't it? I didn't see those other angels your girls talked about, but I did see
the one you call Salamas. It never occurred to me that God cared so much. I know He
is taking care of Davey, too." She looked around. "Where's Dan?"
She ran out the front door and peered up and down the
street. She finally caught sight of him several yards down the street, holding a little
boy in his arms. "Dan..." Betty waved at him.
"Betty, hurry! Get Phil out here!"
Betty ran back in and motioned to Phil, who stood
comforting a hysterical older woman. "Dan needs you...now!"
Phil followed her to Dan. He had two policemen, a screaming
mother and paramedics trying to take the boy from him. He began to run. Phil ran to meet
him. "He's dead, Phil. Why didn't God heal him, too?"
"Maybe this time God wants us to do it."
"Us?"
"I want my baby!" The mother screamed trying to
grab the boy from Dan's arms.
The boy's head lay open, exposing his brain. The skin had
gone white, the eyes open and staring. The paramedics recognized death so they turned
their attention to the hysterical mother, pulling her away from Dan. the police had their
guns drawn on Dan and Phil, demanding Dan hand over the boy.
"What can we do, Phil?" Dan ignored the guns.
Phil laid his lift hand on the boy and raised his right
hand toward Heaven. "In Jesus name, spirit of death, depart from this boy." He
repeated the command several times with Dan echoing him. "I command life into this
child by the blood and in the name of Jesus. You say it, too, Dan."
Both of them spoke together.
The boy stirred in Dan's arms. Color returned to his face.
He blinked his eyes.
The paramedics turned the mother loose. The policemen
lowered their guns.
One police officer turned to the other. "How are we
going to file this in our report?"
Dan gave the child to his mother. "God has given him
back to you."
"Thank you, mister." She wept as she gathered her
son into her arms. "(I'm sorry I screamed at you."
"Don't thank me, thank God."
Phil nodded at the woman. "He's right. It's God you
must thank."
Dan's thoughts turned to the bloody man carrying the heavy
cross beam and suddenly he understood. "By His stripes we were healed," Dan
murmured. "When we learn to use our faith and His Word mixed with compassion, then we
become the masterpiece of God with Jesus as the head and we are the body...His voice,
legs, hands on the earth. That's what they are so afraid of."
Phil looked at Dan and smiled. "Now you've got
it."
A crowd pressed around them. Phil turned and explained what
happened. Paramedics and several police stopped and listened.
Laura and Betty and the children joined them. Many accepted
Christ as Savior that day.
The radio in a near-by police car blared out. "We lost
them. We got the license number, but the computer information on it is blocked. What's
going on here?"
