Chapter Fifteen

Dead End

“They have to be here. There’s no way they could get out without us seeing them.” Boyd shouted with rage, his black eyes turning a glowing red.

“Maybe that blank wall is another camouflage,” Julian reasoned startled at Boyd’s appearance. “Let’s try it out.” He moved forward reaching out his hand to touch the blank wall. As he did pictures formed and scenes began to change in rapid succession.

Two tall men with black eyes and white skin wavered in and out of view next to Boyd. They brought with them the smell of sulfur and death. They looked enraged and directed it toward Boyd. He screamed, clutching his throat, his face twisted in agony.

“You have failed us.” One of them spoke to Boyd. Suddenly he grew limp and fell to the floor.

Terrified, Julian flattened himself against the wall of the tunnel as if trying to disappear into it.

The scenes continued to pass.

Boyd groaned while he slowly revived.

Julian heard the transparent creatures talking between themselves.

“Another portal. Why did no one know about this one? Our prey must have disappeared into it. It will take some adjustment to figure out in what section they can be found. When we do find them their end must come slowly for this insult.”

“These two idiots will have to do the searching since time travel is forbidden to us, but how to estimate the time to send them. We must consult with the others.”

Julian watched as they faded from view. This was becoming more dangerous and complicated than anything he had ever imagined. How could he get out of this? Boyd had recovered from his ordeal. He rose to his feet and stared at Julian. “Don’t even think you can leave now. You’re in this to the end, like it or not.”

“I didn’t sign on to work with stinking ghosts or whatever they are. Time travel ain’t exactly what I had in mind either. What the blankety blank if we can’t get back?” Julian’s face was contorted with a combination of rage mixed with fear.

Boyd grinned in derision. “See what happens if you try to leave, old man.”

Julian decided he would rather take his chances with a madman like Boyd rather than travel through time and fight with evil ghosts. He turned and dashed back down the tunnel with Boyd’s evil laughter following him.

The two apparitions he had seen earlier appeared before him blocking his path. They were transparent. In a panic Julian tried to go through them and found himself surrounded in a stinking fog that chocked him. He leaned against the wall of the tunnel grasping his throat. His eyes bulged with terror and the effort to breathe. Just as the world appeared to be fading away, the hold on his throat was released.

“Go back, stupid human. Your job is not done.”

Boyd arrived to see what was happening. “There is no escape, Julian.” He sounded almost sympathetic. “What we do here goes way beyond anything you have ever imagined.”

“Seize the artifacts before doing anything else,” one of the men in black commanded. “Sit in the ruby chair. It will make things clearer to you then take all the objects to another place we will show you. If those people find their way back they must never find any of it again. They may make many claims about what they think they know, but no one will believe them without proof. You must remove the proof and give it over to The Company. Waste no more time here. If the others come back we will lead you to them later.” The two evil angels known as ‘men in black,’ then faded from view.

Resuming his normal calm, Boyd helped Julian to his feet. “We have a lot to do. The sooner we get done the sooner we can be free to do as we like. In case you never guessed, they gave me my youth and strength in return for my loyalty.”

Taking a deep breath as he rubbed his throat, Julian continued back down the tunnel toward the cavern containing the artifacts with Boyd behind him. “You sold your soul to the devil.” Julian commented.

Amused, Boyd nodded. “You could say that. It does have its benefits.”

“And its drawbacks,” Julian mumbled rubbing his throat.
