Chapter Sixteen

Culture Shock

John kept his arm around Myrna not willing to lose track of her in the crowds of people gathering for the great event Raphael told them they must see.

Sydney was mingling along the booths that had food and drink. They were arranged much like the souks of Jerusalem with loud bartering going on all around. Small replicas of the Hall of Records and Sphinx were offered as souvenirs for barter. He noticed with some alarm the gigantic stature of some of the people. Others that were more normal size gave them wide berth for they trampled on those who did not get out their way fast enough. He had already suffered culture shock at what he had seen in the cave, but this gave him a total feeling of strangeness mingled with fear.

He was thirsty so looked for something in one of the booths that offered drink.  Since he was in effect hidden from view he picked up a container filled with an aromatic beverage. On taking a sip his vision became heightened and colors seemed to float about in the air. Too late he realized the drink was drugged. He dumped out the rest of the stuff on the ground and began searching for his companions while he still had his wits about him.

He felt a hand on his shoulder. Terrified he turned to face his attacker only to see the concerned face of Raphael. “I should have warned all of you not to eat or drink anything while you are here. These people are not your ancestors and their metabolism is much different. They are from a destroyed civilization that existed long before yours.  The vegetation and animals here may look familiar, but the chemical composition of life here is slightly different, enough to make most of their food inedible to you. I will lead you to your friends. I have already told them about this. Please try to stay together. You will all be safer that way.”

Raphael then touched his head. Sydney’s thoughts cleared and he followed the angel through the strange looking crowd until they found John and Myrna.

“Thank God,” Myrna exclaimed hugging Sydney in relief, “we thought we’d never see you again.”

“No more wandering off,” John growled at him as if he were a small child. “Some of these people would step on you without giving it a second thought.” John glanced pointedly in the direction of giants that were over sixty feet tall. Their faces looked like gargoyles. A few were female.

John’s scar was turning red giving him a fierce look, a look he had taken advantage of as a cop.

Unaffected, Raphael smiled. “I will show you a safe place to stand. The great event is about to occur. You must stay next to me. Don’t be startled when you see me change. It is mainly for your protection.” He led them to a place behind the crowd.

“This is kind of far away,” Myrna noted. “Will we still be able to see?”

“Leave that to me.” Raphael disappeared then reappeared as a giant more than sixty feet tall. He still looked like himself, just bigger.

They all stepped back ready to run.

He leaned down and stopped them. “Don’t worry. I will lift you up to see everything. No one will bother you as long as you are with me.” At those words he lifted them one by one to sit on his shoulders that were several feet wide.

“Wow. What a view,” Sydney said as he glanced over the crowd.

Myrna sat close to Raphael’s face and clung to a lock of his hair. “Please don’t let me fall,” she whispered into his huge ear. “I really hate heights.”

John had no comment, but stared in fascination at the panorama before them. Nothing he had studied about ancient civilizations prepared him for anything like this. They were on a fertile plateau that stretched as far as the eye could see. Behind them was the thick forest where they had first stepped out of the doorway. The river was to their right and they were facing in a direction that took in the Hall of Records and Sphinx with its enclosure. There was so much rich color in all they saw it was hard to liken it to what was still there in the 21st. century. Bright sunlight made everything sparkle. The sky was a brilliant blue. No clouds were evident anywhere. The air was invigorating and heightened their senses.

Raphael said nothing, but pointed to a spot in the sky that appeared to be growing larger. The king was about to make his appearance.

They all gasped as the ship came into view and hovered above a huge platform in front of the great pyramid. The king disembarked and floated gently to the platform dressed in jewels from head to toe. He grew to a massive size before everyone’s eyes and glanced at the crowd. His piercing azure eyes seemed to look directly at everyone. Standing at least head and shoulders above the largest of the giants and other angels, his voice boomed out in musical notes as if his vocal cords were made of musical instruments. They could even see the colorful waves of his voice wafting on the air.

Entranced they sat on Raphael’s shoulder and listened to the wonderful voice. He was speaking in English. How could that be?

Reading their thoughts, Raphael said, “You hear in your own language but, he is speaking in Atlantean which is the common language of everyone here.”

“Who is he?” Myrna asked in a hushed voice.

“Lucifer, the Light Bearer. That’s what his name means. He will be known by many names in the civilizations to come: Amun, Amun Ra, Satan, Destroyer, Beelzebub, Seth and many others. Many of the Egyptian, Greek and Roman gods you have heard about are his angelic followers.”

“How can such evil be so beautiful?” Myrna gazed at him in wonder.

“His judgment is still in the future.” Raphael said in a low voice so as not to disturb any of the crowd.

They listened to the angel who called himself king and demanded to be worshipped as he announced the name of the neighboring planet and told them the plateau was a time marker for the day of his victory against the Creator of the Universe and his intentions to soon be ruler of all.”

John remained silent as he thought over what he was seeing and hearing.

“What arrogance!” Sydney exclaimed.

“Exactly.” Raphael agreed. “It is the sin that will destroy him.”

Raphael led them back to the Time Gate. “You will visit another time before going home. When you get home you will have a dangerous and difficult job to do.”

“What job?” Sydney asked.

John and Myrna remained silent. They were both thinking of finding the killers of their friend, Paul Schultz. They would also have to find another hiding place for the artifacts in the cave now that their enemies knew its location.

“You will find out after you are reunited with an old friend of yours who is living in another time.”

“I have never seen the Hall of Records behind the Sphinx. What happened to that?” John had to squeeze in another question.

“It will be sunk deep in the earth before the time God creates man. This is all I am allowed to tell you now. Your friend will tell you the rest.”

Once again they were standing in front of what appeared to be a rocky hill in the middle of the forest. As they drew closer scenes formed on the side of the hill. “What keeps animals from going through?” John asked.

“It only responds to humans.”

As the scenes flashed by Raphael waited and then said, “Now.” And shoved them through.

Once again they were on the plateau, but it looked different now. The colors were dimmer on the Sphinx. The Hall of Records was gone and pyramids were now in place, the river seemed narrower and the forest behind them seemed sparse. Even the blue of the sky seemed a slightly different shade. The heavens were still brilliant with the planets and stars magnified through the water wall that once again surrounded the Earth. The air was oxygen rich and invigorating as before and the sounds of space could still be heard. It was musical, but not as beautiful as at the end of the golden age.

People were working, but the tone of the singing had changed. It had lost the joyous sound and now cadenced the motion of the work. Giants were still evident and people of normal size as well. They were hauling blocks of stone toward the Sphinx. They were dragging them on sledges, not floating them. It was the last pyramid they were working on this time.

Once again a whole community had grown up around the area and smells of cooking wafted on the air.

One of the smaller figures wearing white with red trim Egyptian clothes was hurrying toward them. As he drew closer he broke into a run.

John broke into a jog as he recognized him. The others hung back in uncertainty.

“Jeremiah! How is this possible? What a sight for sore eyes.” The two men met and embraced thumping each other on the back in joyous greeting.

Myrna gasped then tears slipped down her cheeks as she, too, recognized the tall slender figure. He had hardly changed since she had seen him thirty years ago.

“Who is this guy? How can you know anyone from here?” Sydney wanted to know.

“He will have to tell us that.”

Myrna joined John and hugged Jeremiah. “We thought you were dead.”

“I know. It was best that way. And what of Paul? I have missed my old friend.”

John and Myrna exchanged glances. “He is dead, my friend. His murder is what brought us back to Roswell and the cave.

“You don’t look much older than when we last saw you. How is that possible?”

“I will tell you later. Who have you brought with you?” Jeremiah observed Sydney with his hands in his pockets standing aside looking very left out of things.

“Sorry, Sydney,” Myrna said. “Jer, this is someone we met in Roswell just recently, He has a store across from the UFO museum and works at one of the better restaurants as well. He knew Paul from his meetings. We will have to tell you later. There is so much we need to get caught up on.”

John tapped her on the shoulder. “Yeah, well, this isn’t such a good place to stand and talk.” He pointed. Two of the giants were staring curiously in their direction.

“Come with me.” Jeremiah led them off as nonchalantly as possible. He headed toward the river until he found a boat hidden in the tall rushes. The giants had turned their attention elsewhere.
