Chapter Twenty-One

Following Evil (The Denver Airport)

Most of the crowd at the airport did the usual hurry from one area to another to make connections. Others were happily greeted by friends and family while still others were waiting in the areas designated for a soon departure reading newspapers, keeping children in line or munching on snacks. Some were staring at the colorful murals. One or two were rubbing their stomachs and grimacing slightly.

A woman’s voice constantly announced arrivals and departures over the intercom in Spanish and English.

Everyone in the group had taken something to lessen any nausea they might feel. Even so the feeling of weirdness persisted causing a slight flutter in their midsections in spite of preventative measures.

“Except for the murals everything seems to be normal.” Myrna announced. “Oh look. There’s someone I know. I wonder what she’s doing here.” Myrna pointed in the direction of her friend.

A pudgy four foot eight Agnes MacNulty dressed in plaid skirt and red blouse with matching knee high socks reached up to her head to adjust a bright red tam with plaid trim that had slipped over one eye. In her seventies and still full of nervous energy, she busily arranged the piles of brochures and magazines in one of the areas selling books and souvenirs.

Myrna giggled. “At my water aerobics class, she does the same with the water bottles we fill with water and use for weights. She lines them all up in a perfect row. She can’t be still for a minute. If she smoked she would be a chain smoker.” Myrna waved to get her attention and raised her voice over the sounds in the airport. “Agnes…Agnes.”

John was wishing she hadn’t mentioned smoking. He tapped his pocket in frustration looking dismally at the no smoking signs throughout the airport.

The men examined the murals they had seen on the computer while Myrna approached her friend. She had to get directly in front of the bustling little woman before she got her attention. “Did you forget your hearing aids, Agnes?”

“Ohhh, Myrna. I didn’t hear you. What are you doing here?” Agnes bubbled, smiling broadly.

Myrna tapped her own ear slightly and looked at Agnes questioningly.

“Oh, dear. I must have turned my hearing aids down and forgot to turn them back up. Sorry.”

“What are you doing here, Agnes, and where is your husband?”

Agnes’s face clouded. “I lost him somewhere. Isn’t that terrible? We went through this small doorway in this airport trying to get to a lower level to change planes and…Oh my, it was frightful. I just don’t know what to think.”

“Didn’t you report it?”

“Of course, but no one seems to be doing anything. The airport police said they would look into it. That was more than two hours ago. I haven’t heard anything…not anything.” She began to sob.

“There now. Maybe I can help. Tell me what doorway you went through.”

“We asked Information where to go then the young woman pointed at this strange looking man in black and told us to follow him. Well, we did follow him. When we got close enough we realized he smelled awful…just awful…so we lagged behind a little, but we did get through the door. It’s a very narrow door. I barely fit through it and you can hardly see it. It blends right into the wall. If we hadn’t followed that strange man we never would have found it.

“Inside was an elevator. We waited until the smelly man was gone then we got on. We just wanted to go down one level, but it just kept going. Finally the doors opened into the most surreal scene I have ever witnessed and the smell was absolutely nauseating. My husband hurried out. I was about to follow him when the doors closed and brought me back up here. I hit all the buttons on the elevator wall, but it made no difference so here I am. I tried to get to that doorway again, but I can’t find it. That woman at the Information booth is gone and no one else has seen her…ever. I just don’t know what to do. I have tried talking to airport security and anyone else who would listen. They all think I am just an old lady with bats in her belfry.” With that she began sobbing again.

Myrna waved at Syd and John to get their attention then motioned to where she was heading as she led the distraught Agnes to one of the chairs in a nearby waiting area. They joined her there.

Agnes sobbed out her story to the two men as Myrna patted her sympathetically, her large blue eyes filled with concern.

“Do you think you could remember the general direction you headed when you found that doorway?” Murphy had his detective antenna out now.

Jeremiah stared around the airport. “This is truly a strange place. Paul would be fascinated if he could be here.”

Syd just nodded. “I knew it. I knew it. There really is something here.”

“Can I get you something to eat, Agnes? Coffee or something?” Myrna wanted to be sure Agnes would remain as calm as possible.

“Decaf, please,” Agnes said as she daubed at her eyes with a plaid handkerchief.

As soon as they had her needs met she pointed them in the general direction that she could remember. They departed on their search assuring her they would do all they could to find her husband.

“Have any of you felt nauseated?” Myrna wanted to know.

“Only a little,” Murphy admitted. Jeremiah and Sydney nodded in agreement.

“I think it has not affected as much as some others because we have shielded ourselves with prayer plus the medication.” Jeremiah was leading the way toward a far wall that had a mural of the Jewish girl in the coffin. “I have a sense that the wall over there is the one we want.”

One man broke away from a magazine stand where he appeared to be browsing and headed toward Jeremiah and the others. He kept pace with them for a few moments. “You knew Paul Schultz?” He asked Jeremiah.

Jeremiah and the others stopped in their tracks.

“No, No. You must keep walking as if you aren’t listening to me.” He did not look at them but appeared to be looking straight ahead and going at this own pace as they continued on with him.

“He wasn’t the only survivor of that firefight. I have managed to escape their detection. I heard what happened to Paul so I know they caught up with him. They will probably find me out before long. They seldom fail to find whoever they want and eliminate people as one would a speck of dust. They answer to no one. If you pursue this matter you will put yourselves in great danger.”

“We are already aware of that.” Murphy said not looking toward him but pretending to be talking to his wife. “We have already been followed. The man in black a friend of ours saw here is one of them. Her husband disappeared here on a lower level.”

“Disappeared did he? Don’t bother to look for him. He is most probably dead. If he stumbled on to something he wasn’t supposed to see I guarantee you will never see him again.”

“Whoever they are, they have a terrible weapon that can disintegrate people with a beam…millions of people…without a trace.” Murphy continued on as they all walked leisurely toward the colorful wall.

“They will probably use it to eliminate all Christians and Jews and anyone else who they think will stand in their way and call it ‘the Rapture.” With that the man ducked into the passing crowd going toward a gate where a plane was about to take off.

“The devil is trying to make fun of God, but he will never get away with it.” Jeremiah picked up his pace. He was almost to the wall. “God is not mocked. That is why I know we have His protection in this. That is why I had to come back.”

When they reached the wall they stared at it curiously. There was no indication of any doorway just as Agnes had said.

Sydney turned his back to the wall and leaned against it as if he was suddenly very tired. “People are staring at us.”

The others followed his example. Myrna appeared to be studying the mural when a sudden bout of nausea gripped her and she almost threw up on the spot. Claws seemed to be coming out of the mural toward her. She threw herself in Murphy’s arms. “I think we’re in the right place, “ she gasped holding her mouth as she tried to control her stomach. “I saw claws reaching out for me from that awful mural.”

Jeremiah seemed to be rubbing his back against the wall as if it itched when a slight barely discernible crack appeared just behind him.

“That’s it,” Murphy and Syd said together.

XXX

On the other side of the wall they found the elevator. There were no stairs. The elevator doors opened and seemed to beckon them. “We are about to enter the enemy’s camp,” Jeremiah said.

Without pressing any buttons the elevator seemed to go down for what seemed an endless time. They all remained silent praying to God for strength and against the power of fear as the elevator came to a stop.

XXX

The two shining beings followed their charges into the elevator. Other smaller angels surrounded each of the occupants.

“Their guardians are with them, but are forbidden to speak. Will we be leading them then?”

“They will be in the world of the master of illusion and delusion. They will see what their minds allow to them see. We cannot interfere. The Most High has made it clear. Their faith must lead them and we must learn from them.  The guardians are only allowed to keep them from death. The same order is given to us.”

“They have prayed.”

“They must continue to do so even here…more accurately especially here.  They must use their shield of faith to protect their minds.”

“Their faith must protect them from the illusions and tricks the enemy will surely throw at them.”

“We have a few tricks of our own that all of us are allowed to use.”

“Yes…indeed…”

XXX

The downward motion of the elevator seemed to be dropping them miles, not just feet. Each was wrapped in his or her own thoughts and praying silently…praying that their love for God would overcome any fear that assaulted them.

The doors slid open and they stepped into a darkness filled with screams, roars, ear piercing shrieks and the smell of death.

Myrna reached for John’s hand, but was unable to find him. With her arms flailing she shouted for an answer from someone, anyone, but she was alone…alone in the darkness. A cold chill encompassed her. Afraid to move she waited as her eyes adjusted to the dark. Terrified she began to discern her surroundings that were lit up with a dim red glow.

She closed her eyes and prayed the 91st. Psalm repeating the part about the terrors of the night over and over. When she became assured of God’s presence because of the promise of His Word, she opened her eyes and brushed back an unruly lock of blonde hair that had fallen over her forehead and into her eyes.

Her trembling quieted as she stared at the dark cavern. It was huge, like a whole world. The landscape looked like a strange and alien planet. She began to follow what seemed to be the source of the red glow.

Where had the others gone? Had they stumbled into another part of this strange world under the earth and why had they not answered her? A blood-curdling scream answered her thoughts. It was accompanied by what sounded like thousands or even millions of voices screaming in agony.

She had to find the others. Huge stalagmites and stalactites and other formations filled the landscape around her. They could be anywhere in this strange world.

She turned to her right and gasped. Leaning against one of the pillars of stone was her friend’s husband, Bill. He was staring at her, mouth open with an expression of horrified surprise.

“There shall no evil befall me, neither shall any plague come nigh my dwelling. For He shall give His angels charge over me…” she repeated over and over under her breath as she approached him.  Her thick-soled shoes made no sound as she moved, but how could anything be heard over the horrible din of constant screaming?

She reached out to touch him. His expression never changed. “Do you remember me? I am your wife’s friend. She is terribly worried about you.” As she touched him she felt the coldness of his flesh. She tried to find a pulse, but there was none. He slid down the pillar of stone at the probing of her hand and sat still staring straight ahead. “He must have died of fright,” she whispered to herself…”and who could blame him?” Poor Agnes. Now she would be alone.

She moved on keeping a watchful eye out for her companions. Screaming was all around her…a million voices in pain and terror, but she couldn’t see anything. The stench of the place gagged her. She took out a perfumed handkerchief from her pocket and held it to her nose. It helped a little.

She could feel presences around her. “I know your angels are here, Lord. I am counting on that.” She kept moving holding out one of her hands to feel what she might not see. The ground was rough and went up and down steep hills. She had visited the Carlsbad Caverns some years back. The pathway seemed to be similar, but without the pavement and safety rails. She was surprised the temperature was not much hotter than what it was. She knew she had to be near  the molten core of the earth if indeed the core itself was truly molten as most believed. Perhaps the magma was in pockets in different places instead of at the core.

Finally she came to a barrier. Her hand seemed to encounter open air but there was something there…a force field, glass, something. She moved closer and examined it with both hands. She could not see beyond it.

Suddenly a swirling mist appeared and began to clear. Now she could see what lay beyond. Millions of people for as far as she could see were screaming and writhing in agony. They were covered with worms and flames surrounded them, but the flames gave no light. This seemed impossible but there it was. They were all human with insect sized demons clinging to them and tormenting them as well as the flames.

Unable to control it any longer she threw up and kept retching until all contents were gone. Afterwards her stomach still spasmed uncontrollably. She turned her back to the horrible sight and moved back in the direction she had come from. She hoped to find the others and the elevator and get out of there. Now she had seen the holding placed called Hell filled with the unredeemed dead of all the ages. It was a sight she would never forget.

The screaming was so overwhelming she could barely think, but just kept putting one foot in front of the other until she come to Bill’s body and knew she was not far from her starting point and the elevator.

Finally she heard the shouts of her companions just barely discernible over the noise. It came from just ahead of her. She began to run toward them. Now she could see them. A great rush of relief engulfed her as she threw herself into her husband’s arms.

Jeremiah patted her on the back in welcome. “Thank God the Eternal. Each of us thought we were alone. God’s presence is with us though.”

They all had their own story to tell about what they saw.

A shaft of light beckoned them as the elevator doors slid open. Gratefully they rushed aboard.

XXX

They all held hands as the elevator doors slid open once again, determined to stay together this time.

“I can’t understand why we got separated,” Sydney mused.

“One of the most horrible punishments of hell is the feeling of absolute aloneness,” Jeremiah said.

“I’ve heard people say for years,” John murmured softly in deep thought, “that at least they would be with all their friends in hell. Now I can see the stupidity of such a statement. At least we had the presence of God with us. I don’t want to even imagine what it would be like without that.”

“I had to keep quoting Scripture to myself and praying as I went to make the fear go away,” Myrna said. “You should have seen the look of horror on Bill’s face. He must have died of fright.”

“It would not take much to cause to cause a heart attack in a man of his advanced years.” Jeremiah added.

“Wow. Look at that.” Sydney was at the opening of the elevator looking out with his hand still holding Myrna’s.

It looked like the doorway had opened into water, but none of it rushed in. It was obviously very cold, but the chill did not reach them. The color of the water ranged in varying degrees of blue to total darkness with creatures of the deep supplying their own light.

As they waited and wondered what to do next, the water receded from the doorway until it left a walkway. Cautiously they stepped out. The elevator doors slammed shut behind them. They began walking and staring into the great expanse of water. It seemed as big as any of the surface oceans. They could touch it and get their fingers wet, feel the temperature, and even taste it for saltiness, but it stayed within its boundaries as if held there by an invisible wall.

As they journeyed around the water filled expanse they tasted the water again and noted that there were places where the water tasted fresh instead of salty. No one spoke as they observed with wonder the underwater life.

“Look,” Sydney exclaimed. “That looks like the Loch Ness monster. He’s gobbling up that school of fish.”

“I’ve read about Loch Ness. The lake itself could never support such a monster but if he does his eating here and just shows up in various surface lakes and oceans, it is easy to see how the creatures could survive and never be found.” John observed.

“All the legendary monsters of the deep that disappear are probably here,” Jeremiah said. Do you see over there?” He said as he pointed in another direction. “Perhaps that is the kind of fish that swallowed Jonah. Most believe it was a whale, but the Bible is most specific about it being a fish. See the gills?”

The mammoth creature resembled a shark without the slashing teeth. He swam directly at them. They all drew back involuntarily expecting to be swallowed, but the monster of the deep stopped at the edge of the water limit and turned back in the direction from which he had come.

“Some look like the pictures of dinosaurs I’ve seen in movies and books…the underwater kind anyway. How do they get to the surface world from here, I wonder?” Myrna began walking on with the others behind her. They had to go single file on the narrow pathway that went up and down hills.

“There must be openings to the surface…water filled caverns, maybe under the poles and other places under the great oceans or even deep in some jungles people never see, nu?”

They came to a huge opening going straight up. It was still wet and crustaceans of various sizes could be seen moving here and there…evidence it had recently been filled with water.

“That answers that question. The movements of the water must be governed by the tides.” Sydney said. “I wonder where these grays and reptilians and their UFOs hang out anyway.”

“Another level I would guess.” John stopped and stared into the depths just in front of him. He seemed to be eyeball to eyeball with a Godzilla looking monster. This one was even bigger than the one in the movie. The eyeball of the monster was bigger than John’s whole body. “I am sooooooo glad he can’t come any further.”

“No kidding.” Sydney stood next to John as he, too, stared at the creature in front of them. The others stayed back as far as they could.

Finally Godzilla turned and made his way through a thick forest of seaweed, other plant life, and a colorful garden of coral to snap up a mouthful of the fish that were so plentiful.

As they walked uphill they could see shafts of light streaming down through the water. They could see the opening of another cavern that went straight up seeming to lead directly to the outside and sunlight.

“This answers many questions.” Jeremiah stared after the dragon of the deep until he was out of sight. “Mankind has told stories of such creatures for centuries, nu? Now we see for ourselves that it is not just myth, but true. Creatures of the night seen since man first walked the earth can probably be found on one or more of these levels.”

“I would rather they were strictly myth,” Myna shuddered. “I hate to think of these things in the same world with us.”

“We do seem to share this planet with some strange and grotesque creatures.”  Sydney agreed. “If we write all of what we see in a book,” he said as he observed the myriads of life in the water before him, “who will believe it without proof? We don’t have any cameras with us or anything.”

“They will just have to take it on faith.” Jeremiah said. “To tell is our responsibility…to believe is up to them as it has been since the beginning.

I am wondering if the Hall of Records will be discovered in Egypt before the time of Jacob’s Trouble. The books of Enoch are hidden there.”

“What would happen if the books of Enoch fall into the wrong hands?” Myrna sounded alarmed.

“That I cannot tell you. That is in the hands of God. He can blind their eyes so they cannot find them or do something else…who can say, nu? Best not to try to outguess God.”

“I want to find that murderer we followed to get here, not just because he murdered my friend, but because he is taking the knowledge of that weapon to people without conscience who will use it to destroy us all. We can’t lose sight of that!” John growled.

“Of course you are right, John dear,” Myrna soothed, “We won’t forget why we’re here. I know we are here seeing all these things for a reason. We just have to go along until we arrive where He wants us. We don’t have the power to fight this evil on our own. It must be done His way.”

The light from the open elevator spilled out on the path. They did not bother to ask themselves how the elevator got ahead of them when they would have guessed it was some distance behind. They just hurried toward it wondering what they would see next.

XXX

They arrived at a new level, their new destination. As they stepped into the gray gloom of this new under-the-earth domain, the sounds of sobbing and moaning assailed them. Giants and huge angels populated this world. Some of the angels had wings that flapped uselessly. They were all chained to weights that held them in one place. Some were even pinned to invisible walls like insects on a display board.

Some cried out and begged them to unlock their chains.

“Who are these?” Myrna felt a great sadness as she looked at them.

“I think these are the fallen angels and their offspring…the ones who fornicated with human women. These are the ones Jesus preached to when he descended to the bowels of the earth. He came to show them they failed in their attempt to keep him from being born and that He had won the victory over death, hell and the grave. Their weeping is not the weeping of repentance. It is the weeping of failure and the knowledge that they have no future and no hope and will be here forever.” Jeremiah turned his back to them in disgust.

John and Sydney did the same. Finally Myrna turned also. As she did the elevator doors opened and they silently entered ready to go to their next level.

XXX

Myrna did not want to leave the elevator when the doors opened, but she had no choice. None of them did.

Sydney’s curiosity to see the things he had heard about from others investigating the UFO phenomenon bounded him out the door without hesitation.

John’s determination to catch up with his friend’s killer kept him going. He was like a hound catching the scent of his prey. He would not stop until Boyd was brought to justice.

Jeremiah had agreed to collaborate with Sydney on a tell-all book. With his experience in ancient civilizations and Sydney’s knowledge of the modern UFO craze and now this, it should reveal much to the unsuspecting public if they would only pay attention. He already knew that would be the hardest part of all.

Sydney told him they could put the information on all his popular websites and get those in his e-mail group to help spread the word as well. Getting the public to believe their story would be up to God Himself.

Jeremiah smiled to himself. ‘Oy, God Most High, I know Your angels surround us. Sometimes I am thinking I hear the flutter of their wings.’

As the elevator doors closed behind them, they were standing on a ledge facing a glass wall beyond which was swirling darkness. The barrier did not shut out the sounds and rank smell of the place. Shades of gray light swirled through the darkness and they could make out forms, terrible forms.

Some looked like horses with tails like scorpions and faces of men with teeth like those of a lion and long flowing hair. Their faces were filled with rage as they marched past them through the dark void.

“What are they?” Myrna breathed in disgust as she watched the great multitude of them march past them.

“They will be released to plague the earth during the Time of Jacob’s Trouble before the bodily return of the Son of God. They are the ones who will torture men for six months. They are bound here until that time. This must be the bottomless pit. It is also called the Abyss and the Great Gulf that is fixed between Paradise and Hell.” Jeremiah answered as he watched them march past. “There are other horrors here to be released during that time as well. It is not a myth or symbolic as some would like to believe. It is real.”

They could see creatures of all shapes and sizes, some were the size of insects and even more hideous than anything they had ever seen on the surface. The were clinging to the sides of the wall and crawling up and down it as if looking for a way out.

“What are those things?” John asked.

“Some are the demons that will be called up by conjurers, witches and false religions to do their bidding. That is the only way they can get out.”

“You said Paradise. Is it still down here as well?” Sydney backed up a little as a group of the smaller demons seemed determined to get to him through the transparent wall.

“Do not be afraid. They cannot reach you. They are locked in.” Jeremiah assured him. “Paradise is empty now. The righteous souls that used to be there are in Heaven since the resurrection of the Savior. That part of this underworld has now been taken over by the unredeemed souls of men and become a part of Hell. The Scriptures are telling you that Hell is expanding itself as time goes on.”

“When a Christian casts a demon away, is this where they come?” Myrna had her arms encircling her husband for support as she studied her surroundings.

“Only if they cannot find another human or animal to jump into.”

They watched the horrors in the great bottomless void in silence until the elevator doors opened once again.

XXX

They hesitated before going out the door this time until the back wall came up against them and pushed them out.

“What now, I wonder,” Sydney mumbled.

“Be ready for anything,” John whispered.

“God is showing us all this for a reason. We must just trust Him, yes?”

“I do trust Him or I would be terrified.” Myrna studied their new surroundings.

As their eyes adjusted to the dim green tinged light they could see they were in a futuristic train station with signs repeated in several languages. Some even had the language of the ancient Atlanteans. There were signs pointing to known underground bases such as Dulce and Sedona, Roswell and others pointed to military bases and cities. Some went to the two poles, some to deep regions under oceans and lakes and some to other countries.

Just behind the busy station were humans in business suits, military uniforms and reptile appearing beings, grays and other alien forms they had never seen. Some of the aliens showed obvious distaste or a strained tolerance for one another. They came and went through a door that led to a large room filled with huge screens with different scenes on each. They could only catch glimpses as the beings opened and closed the large doors.

Many of these underground citizens were boarding the various trains. Some of the signs had pictures of UFOs on them much like airport signs on the surface had pictures of airplanes. Trains going in those directions had large groups of reptilians and grays boarding them with a few human looking people in the mix.

Suddenly they spotted Boyd going through the doors leading to the room with screens; probably control central.

“Let’s go.” John took off running to catch up to their nemesis.

“They’ll see us,” Myrna objected looking at the crowd just ahead of them.

“We’ll just look like everyone else. There are humans here, too. That’s what I find disgusting. Our own kind working with these evil things, but at least we can blend in.” Sydney ran to keep up with John.

Jeremiah smiled and hurried Myrna along helping her to catch up. “We are finding what were looking for. No time to hesitate now.”

John entered with the others following. The huge room seemed unending and filled floor to ceiling with huge screens depicting scenes playing out on the surface and in other areas of the underground. People and aliens were milling around everywhere studying the various screens.

John spotted Boyd talking to one of the gray aliens and a man in black that faded in and out of view. The stench in the room was almost unbearable.

John was about to reach out and tackle Boyd until Myrna and the others caught up with him. She grabbed his arm before he could touch Boyd. Noticing the slight scuffle behind them, Boyd and his little group turned around.

Boyd laughed. “You guys look great. You look exactly like them, right down to the holier-than-thou expression. Most of the replicants have some minor details wrong. I can see improvements have been made I wasn’t aware of.”

John’s anger was about to explode until he felt the heel of Myrna’s shoe grinding into his foot as she smiled at him. It was the deadliest smile he had ever seen on his wife’s face. The others were also shaking their heads at him and mouthing the words, ‘shut up.’

“Replicants?” Jeremiah seemed puzzled.

“That’s what they call us, hybrids, who are getting ready to take the place of surface people that are to be abducted or eliminated.” Sydney butted in to keep Boyd and the others from getting suspicious.

“Right.” Boyd said. “Actually I thought maybe you were the morphs of the dragon people. They do it, too, and are good at it. Look better than replicants most of the time.

The gray alien and the wispy man-in-black impatiently motioned Boyd to come with them. “We have a meeting to attend, remember? We need the specs for that item you found and we need it now.”

Boyd nodded and followed, turning to them briefly before disappearing through another door. “You guys really do look great. You almost fooled me.
