Chapter Twenty-Two

The Conference

Boyd entered room surprised at the smoky haze that filled the room. He was aware that many underground dwellers hated smoke. He snorted as he took in the scene. It looked like the bar scene from Star Wars with creatures of all types and sizes milling about with most of them using telepathy as a mode of communication. Some clicks and hums could be heard as well as the low sounds of English spoken with human voices.

That’s when he saw them. The Company. They were all here. Usually in control of every situation, surprise and the little known emotion of fear suddenly struck him. What were they doing here? How would he sell the plans for the weapon with them here?

“Well, Boyd, we’ve been hearing about your exploits on the news.” General Wiley blew out a plume of cigar smoke as he leaned forward in his chair and carefully placed his drink back on the huge rectangular table composed of transparent black lava polished to a high sheen. Others from the company were smiling at him in an unusual display of amiability.

Other creatures in the room found their seats and began to monitor the conversation with interest. The dragon like creatures known as reptilians snickered and then shot looks of resentment when one of the grays shouldered his way between him and another one of the humans. The ages long war between them caused the tension to mount as the two minds battled one another   with accompanying hisses.

The General shot them a warning glance as he blew a plume of smoke at them both. They calmed down as the crowded table of peoples stared at them in resentment. There were more important things to deal with here.

General Wiley turned his attention back to Boyd. “I hear you have something valuable to present to us… a weapon perhaps or perhaps something else of note from the relics you acquired from the cave in New Mexico. I hope for your sake it is enough to nullify your bad press. You are becoming a liability to all of us.”

Boyd could feel the telepathic probing from some of the creatures in the room.  It was giving him a monstrous headache. For self-preservation he decided to change his tactics.

“I didn’t memorize the plans. They were in some weird unknown language. I recognized the drawing in them as a weapon of mass destruction leaving no trace of remains, no radiation, no explosion. All living tissue just…disappears. It would be effect for a …uh…rapture-like occurrence. You have mentioned that the rays you have now can only be used on a small scale. You need something much bigger. This weapon can affect a huge area. It can even pick and choose people and leave others. I am not sure how it does this. It would be in the instructions that I can’t read.

“The plans are hidden and the map to them is in my own personal code in a safety deposit box…just in case any of you decide you no longer need me. It is my life insurance.

The others in the room directed their thoughts to General Wiley.

“All right,” General Wiley said evenly, “you have our attention. What are your demands?”

“I need funds…and a two day head start before giving you the location map which I will send to the usual PO box.”

“What guarantee do we have that you will keep your word?”

“No guarantee, but I am sure you will find me without problem if I don’t.”

General Wiley glanced at the rest of the company who nodded their assent and then at the others in the room. He gestured that he understood their answer. What choice did they have? To kill this idiot now would ruin any chance to find what they wanted.

“Before giving an answer might I ask about the whereabouts of your partner, Julian?”

The general leaned back in his chair to gauge Boyd’s reaction. They already knew the fate of the old man. Their own DNA labs had born out the identity of the faceless man found in a hotel room. One of their operatives had seen the two of them enter the hotel and had observed only one coming back out.

Nonplused Boyd replied. “He had become a liability. I got rid of him.”

General Wiley eyed him silently. “He was in our employ, not yours. Anyway that’s in the past. By funds, how much are we talking about?”

“Two million in gold coins. You know where to deliver it.”

All in the room nodded in agreement surprised that he asked so little.”

“You shall have it before the week is out.”

Where Boyd was going he had to take only what he could carry. He left the room with light steps. This had worked out better than he could have imagined.

XXX

Several disembodied spirits faded out of sight and followed Boyd ordered by the others to never let him out of their sight and not to let him sense their presence in any way.
