Chapter Twenty-Seven

Roswell’s Annual UFO Festival

The distant explosions in the one mountain actually visible from Roswell only caused a slight tremor in the city and went unnoticed by the enthusiastic revelers. The UFO races which were the Roswell version of the soap box derby went on as scheduled as well as the various expert speakers on the subject of UFOs, alien abductions, cattle mutilations, chupacabras and other related subjects continued without incident in the UFO museum, the Convention Center and other available auditoriums in town. Not to be outdone Syd had some guest speakers on the Bible and UFOs in his establishment. He had some old videos that Paul Schultz had made concerning underground bases available in viewing rooms as well.

After getting a few hours rest from their latest adventures Murphy, Myrna and Jeremiah joined Syd to listen to his guest speakers and view the Paul Schultz videos once again with new understanding. They had already let Syd know they were back safe and sound via cell phone before going to their motel room to rest to ease his mind of any worry, promising him all the details when they saw him.

They told him what they had done to Boyd much to his amusement. They all agreed it was an appropriate end to the serial killing monster and murderer of their friend, Paul.

“As far as I’m concerned our work is done here and we can just enjoy the festival then go home to sweet, peaceful Baraboo.” John Murphy announced.

“We have all made some powerful enemies. What do you suppose will happen when they realize their weapon and artifacts are destroyed as well as the time gate?” Myrna wondered.

Jeremiah laughed. “Do you not remember what happened to those demons and fallen angels that attacked us in the cavern? What do you think those flashes of light were that banished them when we spoke in Jesus Name?”

“Who could forget? What a sight that was, Syd.” Murphy paused to light up his pipe. “You should have been there. We must take time to thank God for taking the time and trouble to protect us.”

“Prayer works. He is there to protect us when we have faith in Him,” Syd agreed. “We’ve all been in the enemy’s camp and won the fight. I hate to think what would have happened without God’s protection.”

“Me too,” Myrna shuddered.

They all spent time thanking and praising God.

Some of the visitors in the store watched them curiously and a few joined in for a few moments before continuing with their browsing. Syd sold a record number of books, videos and other mementos that day.

While Syd was busy with his customers the others decided to go to the Convention Center to check things out agreeing to meet him later at one of the twenty-four hour restaurants.

XXX

Roswell’s main street was crowded on both sides with tourists and residents filling the sidewalks and gazing in windows or watching the UFO races down the Main street that was roped off for the occasion. Squeals of children and adults filled the air as well as the aroma of the wares of sidewalk vendors selling tacos, snow cones, and all variety of Mexican foods that were a specialty of the area.

The almost new Convention Center opened to an elaborate parking lot, decorated in the Southwest and Mexican motif that permeated most of the area. Potted trees and flowers were in strategic places about the parking lot to provide shade as well as beauty.

It was easy to walk everywhere one needed to go. Main Street did rise sharply, but was easy to negotiate.  Heat being the worst discomfort caused people to dart into the various waiting stores to cool off in their air-conditioned interiors, a fact well taken advantage of by the various merchants.

In late afternoon the streets and sidewalks had heat waves rising off them. Myrna, Murphy and Jeremiah darted into the Convention Center in gratitude at the sudden blast of cool air.

They just stood and took in the sights for a moment before moving.

Crowds of people moved through the narrow aisles between the vendors selling aliens masks, UFO replicas, books and jewelry. Colorful tee shirts were sold at every other booth with pictures of aliens, UFOs and colorful sayings. “Resistance is futile,” seemed to be a popular theme as well as “Roswell Incident 1947 showing a picture of a crashed saucer with dead alien bodies next to it.

New Age themes on banners and books were everywhere. One older woman with glowing silver hair was selling a red colored book titled “The Agenda: The Real Reason They’re Here.”  Directly across from her booth a couple selling hundreds of books with many New Age titles leered at her in condescending disdain. Myrna moved closer to see the book they held in such contempt. She got to the booth greeted the woman and picked up a book for a closer look. The red book had a picture of a Bible and some UFOs on the cover. Scanning through it briefly she could see the many Scripture references and the eye grabbing chapter titles. Myrna guessed it was probably the only book written from the Biblical point of view available among the thousands of books being touted at the Convention Center. It was one opposing opinion in a vast sea of opposite beliefs.

“I want my friends to see this book,” Myrna said to the lady who introduced herself as Beth. Myrna waved to get Jeremiah’s and Murphy’s attention.

They finally looked up and came over with burritos in hand. Both were stuffing their mouths as if they hadn’t eaten for a week. Murphy handed one to Myrna.

“Late lunch,” he announced. “Too hungry to wait until we meet with Syd. What have you got here?”

Jeremiah was too busy chewing to talk, but looked intently at the red books ignoring the people in the New Age booth behind him who were desperately trying to get his, Myrna and Murphy’s attention. The woman was holding out brochures and business cards.

Finally Murphy turned around. “No thank you,” he said abruptly. His scar turned red and seemed to pull harder than usual at the corner of his eye giving him his best fierce look.

Both of them pulled back, startled at his reaction and turned their attention to several others browsing at their booth.

Myrna tugged on Murphy’s arm as she tried not to laugh. She pointed at Jeremiah whose mouth hung open, his eyes staring.

John followed his gaze and grinned in amusement, his scar fading back to normal.

A young woman covered in silver paint and dressed in a bikini bottom, jiggling antennae and nothing else danced down all the aisles to the amusement of many and consternation of others. The crowd parted like a sea making room for her.

Jeremiah almost dropped his last bite of burrito.

Myrna and Murphy laughed in delight. Murphy patted Jeremiah on the back to bring him out of his trance.

Strange people from all over the country and some from other countries filled the large room. Some came dressed as aliens, Star Trek and other sci-fi characters. The silver girl’s costume or lack thereof was just another strange sight among many.

“Murphy take a look at this book,” Myrna said. “You, too, Jer.” She held up a copy to show them.

They leaned over her shoulder as she flipped through the book. “Syd might be interested in selling this book in his store, Murphy my love. What do you think?”

“Buy a bunch, Myrna. We’ll show them to Syd when we meet him at the restaurant later.”

“We should tell her our story, nu?”

“We want ten of these books, Beth. We may want to contact you later. Do you have a phone number where you can be reached? We may have some information for you.”

“I’m so glad to see someone is interested in my book. Not many are you know. I feel a little out of place here, but am enjoying watching the goings on and meeting interesting people.” She handed them a card with her name and phone number on it.

They all shook her hand and continued on picking their way carefully through the crowd.

Large enclosed booths lined the edges of the room where speakers spoke on selected UFO/aliens related subjects to their own audience of fans, curiosity seekers and skeptics.

The inviting smell of spicy Mexican food, hot dogs and hamburgers wafted through the air adding to the carnival atmosphere.

“Shall we go listen to one of these speakers? It might be interesting.” Jeremiah asked.

“We probably know more than any of them do. We’ve seen more than most others first hand. Listening to them would be kind of moot, don’t you think?” Myrna said.

John Murphy glanced at the No Smoking sign in disgust. “You’re right, of course. I want to go somewhere where I can smoke anyway. Let’s head over to that restaurant and wait for Syd. We can have something to drink while we wait and I can smoke.”

The crowded restaurant seemed warmer than usual with so many extra bodies taking up every table and booth. Excited laughter and the buzz of conversation surrounded them.

“We do need someone we can tell our story to who will believe and maybe put it in writing for us, nu? I am not very good at putting stories on paper. Are you?”

“That’s a good idea, Jer. Syd writes, but not sure about his style. Did you read any of his stuff while you were at the store?”

“This needs to be written with heart … emotion … something.” Myrna began glancing through one of the books.

Jeremiah talked between sips. “He is a good writer, but has a what do you call it? He has a tongue-in-cheek way of putting things. This must be serious and believable.”

The book was short, direct and to the point, John noted as he scanned through his copy between puffs on his pipe. He also noticed it was filled with Scriptures and had some interesting chapter titles. He especially wanted to read the chapter on the Five Compartments of Hell. This book would definitely be worth the read.

The sound of someone clearing their throat made them all look up.

“Whatcha doin?” Syd was all smiles. “Mind if I join you?”

“Please. That waitress over there has tried to get us to order twice already.” Murphy motioned for the waitress.

After they all ordered Murphy put one of the red books in front of Syd. “Take a look at this and tell me what you think.”

Syd scanned the book while they all waited for his reaction.

“I like the chapter on Ezekiel’s wheels, although the one on the compartments of hell sounds strangely familiar. Is there some particular reason you wanted me to see this?”

“We thought you might want to sell it in your store. We bought ten copies so you could see how well it sells.”

“I can do that. Do I have to buy them from you?”

“No. We can afford it. We do have all those bags of gold at our disposal.” Jeremiah said in a low voice, not wanting to be overheard by those nearby. “We were thinking we could tell her our story and have her write it up.”

“I can write.” Syd said sounding a little offended.

“Of course you can.” Myrna said patting his arm. “It might be a good idea for someone outside our group to do it, don’t you think? You can put the information on your web site, but someone else may give it a different more palatable slant in a book. No hurry. It’s just something to think about.” She quickly lifted her glass of ice tea and took a few swallows wondering how she was going to get out of this.

The waitress brought their orders and all temporarily forgot the subject much to Myrna’s relief and Murphy’s amusement.

A couple on the other side of the room watched the four with great interest turning away when any of them looked in their direction.

“The Company wants them dead, but what if they know the plans for the weapon?” The tall slender attractive woman who looked to be in her early thirties and dressed all in shades gray as was her male companion.

“They have their reasons. I’m sure they already thought of that. We’ll do as we were instructed.” The man took a sip of coffee and blatantly stared at their prey as the four got up to leave.

XXX

As they neared the door excited shouts could be heard from outside. Several in the restaurant rushed out the door to see what was happening. One almost knocked Myrna down in his rush to get out the door. Murphy caught her and they all wedged themselves through the crowded doorway into the stifling heat. All were gazing and pointing up. Some had video cameras aimed at the sky.

Overhead in the bright blue cloudless sky hung a V shaped formation of UFOs hanging silent and still just above the main street. Even though they were silent vibrations could be felt as if the sound was beyond the hearing range but was powerful enough to cause everyone’s teeth to chatter and their skin to crawl.

Some of the people in the crowd made their way to the gutters and began to vomit. Others were doing the same. Jeremiah was holding his stomach. Murphy motioned the others to follow him back into the restaurant.

Inside the feeling of nausea did not leave but lessened somewhat. They continued watching out the windows and noticed some people holding their heads as if in great pain. Then the screaming began.

The young couple in gray did not seem to be affected. They watched with expressions of amusement mixed with disdain. The woman stuck a gun in Myrna’s back while her partner did the same with Murphy motioning for them to signal the others.

Jeremiah’s eyes widened and he grabbed Syd by the arm as Myrna and Murphy were shoved against them propelling them forward in from of the determined couple. No one noticed in the excitement of the UFO sighting and subsequent misery that accompanied it.

“One word and no one will live to say another,” the young man in gray growled menacingly.

They were all shoved through the crowd and around the corner where they were ordered not to move.

Suddenly one of the huge oval shaped craft above the street shot out a bright blue beam that swallowed up Syd, Jeremiah, Murphy, Myrna and the couple in gray.
