Chapter Thirty-Two

I’ll See You In the Morning…

“Hello…hello! Wait a moment. I have to turn up the volume…There! Say something.”

“Where’s Myrna? Where is my wife?”

“Oh good. I can hear you now. This is Agnes. You must be John?”

“Yes, of course it is. I’m calling our house. Where is Myrna?”

“Oh, Mr. Murphy. You need to come home right away. Myrna is very ill. I’ve been staying here with her. She refused to stay in the hospital. We didn’t know how to reach you and have been waiting for you to call.”

Murphy chewed on his pipe stem and his scar turned purple. “What is wrong with her? What did they tell you at the hospital?”

“They asked me where she had been. I could only tell them, Roswell. That’s what she told me anyway. They said it was as if she had been in space for a long time. She is suffering from space sickness and extreme dehydration.

Mr. Murphy, how in the world would she be suffering from these things?”

“I’ll tell you when I see you. May I talk to her?”

“I will have her pick up the extension in the bedroom. Wait a moment.”

Murphy wiped beads of sweat from his brow. Bad news always did this to him and to make matters worse the Egyptian hotel room was hot and sticky. He thought she would be safe at home. This just couldn’t be happening. Not to Myrna.

“Something is wrong with Myrna, John?” Jeremiah put his hand on Murphy’s shoulder.

The others watched and listened anxiously.

“Apparently she was sicker than she let on. Her friend Agnes is staying with her.” Murphy held up his hand for silence as someone at the other end picked up the phone.

“John, have you and the others finished?” Myrna’s voice was weak and barely audible.

“We were just getting ready to come home. We have a flight out tonight.”

“Hurry, my love, hurry.”

Murphy heard the phone hit the floor. Agnes picked it up.

“She is so sick, Mr. Murphy. I will stay with her until you get here.”

“Can I talk to her again?”

“She is asleep. Call later from the plane and perhaps she will be able to talk again.”

“Thanks for taking care of her, Agnes. She intended to go comfort you and it seems it is the other way around.”

“She did comfort me and now it is she who needs me. I am glad to do this. Do hurry, Mr. Murphy.”

John burst into tears. “I’ll hurry. Tell her to wait for me.”

“I will…I will. Good bye now.”

Murphy’s face paled as he sat down heavily on the bed. A fog of unreality filled his brain. A life without Myrna was too terrible to even contemplate. Suddenly nothing else mattered, no artifacts, strange weapons or ancient books, only the love of his life, Myrna.

“I know this is a bad time, John, but it is imperative we get these scrolls to the Coptic Church.” Jeremiah looked with sorrow at the pain in his friend’s face. “Perhaps with Abdul’s help, we can handle it without you. I believe there might be enough room in our robes to take the ones you have as well.”

“No. I will go with you. It will help pass the time until our plane leaves. Staying busy is what I need right now.”

Abdul donned his headgear once again as did the others. He studied Murphy with concern. “I hope your wife will recover. From what I have heard from you and the others she must be quite a woman. I would like to meet her some day. I have been thinking of getting a visa to visit the states now that my goal of a great find has been reached.”

Syd stood in the open door waiting. “We’d better go now. We will be praying for Myrna. She is my friend and has been a colleague in a great adventure.”

“We should pray now, I am thinking. This must be the reason I felt the urgency to return to the states.” Jeremiah motioned Syd to close the door and they all bowed their heads and prayed for Myrna.

The two angels followed the group to the church. As they entered the doors one of them whispered in the ear of the priest in one of the back rooms instilling in the man a sense of urgency and expectancy that something wonderful would soon be happening.

The angels smiled as the priest met the group and took them to a back room as if he expected them, much to their surprise.

When he saw what they had his excitement could not be contained. They almost had to restrain him from shouting.

He was warned to keep the find quiet and hide the documents so neither the Egyptian government nor anyone else would find them.

He eagerly nodded his agreement and led them to a large rolling cart to transport them to their hiding place. He motioned them to follow.

The angels whispered in Jeremiah’s ear.

“No. It is best we do not know exactly where they are. There are others who might try to force the location from us. We will go now. Hide them well. The forces of evil would do much to find these.”

“Of course. I understand. They will be safe here.”

On the long trip home, Murphy kept to himself lost in his own thoughts. The others talked around him doing their best not to disturb him.

Visions of blond hair, blue eyes and the smell of gardenias filled his mind. He ached with his need and love for her. The fastest plane available could not get him there soon enough. Every moment away from her stole time away, valuable time he should be spending with her. Why had he not seen it? Was he so blinded by his own selfish sense of adventure that he failed to see her true condition? Don’t let her die, Lord. I need her. Please….. He chocked back a sob. Tears drifted down his face. The scar had faded to nothing as he leaned his head against the window that looked out on miles of piled up clouds. He let his mind drift imagining himself drifting through the clouds unfettered by metal.

“LOOK!” A passenger several rows behind him screamed. Everyone looked her way. She was pointing to a sight outside the window. Those across the aisle got up to look with the others.

A massive UFO almost as bright as the sun matched the planes speed and trajectory.

Several towering angels unseen by anyone shielded the explorers from the minds and beams of those in the craft. Only the other passengers could be sensed.

Satisfied that what they sought could not be found on this plane, the UFO banked and zipped out of sight.

Several in the plane had cameras and were clicking away until the ship disappeared from sight. After that excited conversation buzzed around them. The attendants notified the captain and the captain tried to decide what he should announce as an explanation. This was not the sort of thing that could be reported when he landed. He and the crew could lose their jobs. He decided to call their attention to the colors of the sunset and how strange phenomenon could sometimes be seen this time of the evening. He then went on to announce they were near their destination and what the temperature would be when they landed and thanked them for traveling with their airlines. He was glad the door between him and the passengers was locked in case anyone insisted on questions.

Jeremiah, Syd and Murphy exchanged glances, but said nothing. All had goose flesh and all had broken out in a cold sweat. Not wanting to be overheard by anyone, they spoke of trivial things until they landed.

Murphy called his wife on the plane’s phone, but Agnes said she had lapsed into a coma. Once again he went into a dark corner of his mind and stayed there for the remainder of the trip.

Jeremiah and Syd dropped Murphy off in front of his home and went to find a motel to stay near until Murphy might need them.

Agnes met Murphy at the door. He rushed past her to the bedroom. He stopped in the doorway and looked at his wife’s still figure. Her blond hair still gleamed as always, but her skin looked dry and her lips seemed parched as if she had been in a desert for a long time. Though closed, her eyes sunk deep into her head leaving dark shadows. An IV line was taped to one of her arms. A home nurse checked on her regularly.

Murphy knelt beside the bed and buried his face in her bosom and sobbed. “Myrna, don’t leave me.” He said it over and over until he felt fingers in his hair. He lifted his head and saw her looking at him through half open eyes.

“I was waiting for you, John. I had something to tell you before I go.”

“Go? Where are you going?”

Her voice sounded like a hoarse whisper. “Where are Jeremiah and Syd?”

“Near-by. They’re somewhere close. Do you need to see them?”

“No. I’m just glad they’re here for you. Is there another called Abdul?”

“Yes, but…how did you know?”

“The four of you have another mission. You must get Paul’s disks and have Syd put them on the Internet. Get the word out. Have that lady we met write our story in a book. She has a website she can put it on. Time is almost up. He will come for all of you soon. This must be done and done quickly.” She stroked his tear-streaked face gently. “It will be dangerous. The evil ones will try to stop you. You must keep the faith to survive.”

“I can do that as long as you’re with me.” He clung to her hand and stroked her hair.

“No. This is for you to do. I must go.”

“NO!”

She put her hand on his face. “My love, they are here for me.” Her eyes drifted to a space behind him. Her eyes brightened and she smiled. “Don’t fret, John, I’ll see you in the morning.” Her hand dropped limply and a last breath escaped her body.

Murphy buried his face against her chest and sobbed until he was exhausted.

Agnes came into the room and seeing what had transpired she said, “She waited for you. She wouldn’t let go until you got here.”

John got up and nodded. “I’ll call my friends and tell them. Will you take care of the arrangements for me? I’ll give you all the money you need. I want her buried here in Baraboo. She loved it here.”

“Yes. I will do that. That’s one thing I can do for you both.”

“I’ll give you the birth date and all the details. Have them write on her stone…’I’ll see you in the morning. Can you do that?”

Agnes daubed her eyes with her hanky and nodded.
