Chapter Eight
Interlude John saw his men die screaming in the hot humid jungles of Viet
Nam when he unknowingly led them into an ambush. Nothing seemed real. He felt nothing. He
just shot off rounds of bullets without thinking or hearing until one Viet Cong jumped him
from behind and he found himself fighting for his life. He felt a searing pain in his gut
and then his face as the oriental face of a blood crazed youth leered at him just inches
from his own face. The youth sawed at John’s face with his knife as if trying to peel
it off. In the background he could barely make out the thumping sound of
helicopter blades. When shots rang out the body on top of him that was sawing at his face
went limp with the sudden weight feeling like it was crushing him. After that nothing. John remembered what Jeremiah told him about death and what was
beyond as he drifted above his body. He found himself being pulled down a dark endless
corridor with a pinpoint of light at the end of it until he became aware of a light
shining in his eyes and felt himself drop into his body. And then there was pain, lots of
pain. He was back. |
